# AlphaTheta XDJ-AN: the club workflow, without the laptop

AlphaTheta has replaced the XDJ-RR, and the new player is not a small update. The XDJ-AN is a compact two-channel standalone that brings the club-style CDJ workflow, hot cues and a bright touchscreen, down into an affordable all-in-one you can run with no laptop at all. It is out now at around 999 pounds, or 1,149 dollars in the US before tax.

The easiest way to place it: think of it as the standalone version of the DDJ-FLX4, one of the most popular controllers around. Same broad build and feel, but this one stands on its own with a screen and a USB port, and no computer in sight.

## What is actually new

The XDJ-AN drops the old performance-pad layout and inherits the essentials of a CDJ and DJM club setup. Two decks, two channels, and the workflow you meet in the booth.

- Eight hot cues per deck, a loop encoder to set and resize loops, and the play, cue and shift layout you already know from club players.
- A bright, slightly raised touchscreen that holds most of the controls. Memory cues, slip, vinyl mode, quantize, beat jump, grid adjust and even sync all live on the screen now.
- rekordbox cloud library sync. Hot cues, loops and playlists you make on the unit travel back to your laptop and phone, and the other way round.
- Streaming built in through a rekordbox plan: Beatport, TIDAL and Apple Music, with Spotify on the way. No USB stick needed.
- DJM-REC support for recording and streaming straight from the unit, which is a first for an all-in-one standalone. You can also record to a USB drive.
- Bluetooth in and out. Pipe a phone into a channel, or send audio to a speaker (fine for background music, not for beatmatched DJing, because of the latency).
- Sonic Link support for AlphaTheta's low-latency wireless headphones.

## Connect it your way

This is where the XDJ-AN earns its keep. Plug in a USB-C drive and play offline. Connect a laptop for rekordbox or Serato DJ. Or connect a phone or tablet running the rekordbox app or Algoriddim's djay, and DJ with no computer at all. One thing to pack: the music port is USB-C only. This is the first DJ unit to drop the old USB-A slot, so an older thumb drive will not fit.

## What it replaces

Officially the XDJ-AN steps into the slot the XDJ-RR used to hold. In the hand it feels a lot like Denon's SC Live, and it shares the short-throw pitch fader and compact jog wheels of the FLX4. The name is the tell. This is the entry point to standalone DJing, and it is built to lead, eventually, into a real CDJ booth.

## The good

- Club-style hot cue workflow that carries straight over to the gear in most booths.
- Small, light and laptop-free. It fits a bedroom, and the pro XLR and RCA outputs mean it also holds up at a bar or a party.
- Cloud and streaming built in, so your whole library is a login away.
- You can record, and even stream, from the unit itself with DJM-REC. That used to be a club-gear feature.
- Genuine flexibility: USB-C drive, laptop, or a phone with rekordbox or djay. Play the way you like.

## The catches

- No stems, no key sync, no key shift and no sampler. If you build sets around key mixing or quick mashups, look elsewhere.
- A lot of the controls live on the touchscreen. You need to be comfortable tapping the glass for things like slip and memory cues.
- Two master outputs but no separate booth output, and the only extra input is Bluetooth.
- The music port is USB-C only, so your older USB-A sticks are out.
- The cloud is promising but still being ironed out, and Android support lags behind iOS.

## Who it is for

New and improving DJs who want the club layout without a laptop, and without the price of the higher-end gear. It also suits anyone who likes to prep music on the device and have it sync everywhere. If your goal is to end up on CDJs one day, the muscle memory you build here comes with you.

## Price and availability

The XDJ-AN is out now at around 999 pounds, or 1,149 dollars in the US before tax. Full details are on the [AlphaTheta product page](https://alphatheta.com/en/product/all-in-one-dj-system/xdj-an/black/).

One last thought. A standalone built around cloud libraries, phone connection and on-board recording fits how a lot of sets happen now, including home streams and remote gigs. If you play that way, the XDJ-AN travels light and keeps you close to the club workflow.
